introducing... THUMP

thump

One of the things I've been working on recently is a sequencer/synthesizer for the iPhone called THUMP.

"Thump is the ultimate pocket groove box for your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The intuitive interface allows you to dive in straight away to make music in seconds, then explore the wide array of options and settings to tweak your sound to perfection. Ideal as a musical sketch pad or a live performance tool."

I wrote it in openFrameworks, so it cross compiles on the Mac, so you can download the Mac version here if you'd like to try it. iPhone and Windows versions coming soon. Almost everything totally cross-compiles between Mac and iPhone. It's the future.

For this, I had to write a bit of code for getting sound streams in and out of the iPhone, which you can download here.

very cool. I am excited to see this go live.

It looks very good! This is what I've been looking for for my iPod.

Hi Marek can you export your compositions from iphone version to load into tools like audacity etc?

I'm probably going to make an export WAV feature on the Mac and PC versions, so you would transfer the tunes from your iPhone to the computer, then use the computer program to dump the sounds.

I've been using thump for a while, as well as Rangrid and Bleepbox.
I find thump useful as it is the only one of the three with true polysynth capability.
And, it's simple and sounds great. A few suggestions I'd like to see:
-ability to tune/pan/alter drum sounds within app
-a song mode to automate pattern selections across all three instruments
-ability to copy/paste patterns
-multitouch support
-pan control in mixer for synths
-mono mode for synths
-bpm syncable delay
-keyboard for live note entry

With additions like these, thump will be a serious live/production tool.

Drop me a line if you'd like to chat about this app, cnewkirk at screamlab.com

cheers

Hey!

Thanks for the ideas! I've been meaning to do most of these things for a while now. Next version will definitely have copy-paste and multitouch. Possibly some of the other things too.

I have a pretty intense job at an Industrial Touchup paint company and for the last few months THUMP has been a big part of my breaks. It's such a sweet thing to be able to easily jump into a groove after dealing with the day-to-day stresses that tend to come up.

Hi Mark, I love Thump, the more I play with it (Had it a couple of years) the more I love it, but it feels like it needs a long overdue update, like the suggested ideas above, I'd love a few more kits to play with. Thump and Sampletoy are proper 'keepers' both could use some tweaks and extra features to keep them fresh. Please? ;-)
